Service update: Heatwave in the Netherlands notebook

Learn how to read, process and use Sentinel-3 Land Surface Temperature. Heatwaves pose a growing risk to human health, ecosystems and infrastructure, especially in the context of climate change. This notebook showcases a tool for mapping heatwaves using Sentinel-3 products, focusing on the Netherlands and the conditions proposed by the National Heatwave Plan.

The notebook guides you step by step through data discovery, accessing Sentinel-3 SLSTR data in the new EOPF Zarr format, and processing the data to analyse the number of heatwave events in the Netherlands in 2023.

EOPF open source plugins

xarray-eopf

The EOPF engine for xarray was released in version 0.1.2. This release allows access to subgroups within the EOPF Zarr via the DataTree model of xarray. The package is available via conda-forge and PyPI.

xcube-eopf

xcube-eopf is a Python package and xcube plugin that adds a data store named eopf-zarr to xcube. The data store provides analysis-ready data cubes (ARDC) from the EOPF Sentinel Zarr Samples. A demo of its key features was presented in EOPF Webinar #4, and the corresponding notebook is available in the EOPF notebook gallery.

Webinars

We’re already at the sixth instalment of our nine-part webinar series supporting users in adopting the new EOPF Zarr data format. Building on the insights shared so far, each session continues to offer practical guidance and expert input tailored to a wide range of user needs.

EOPF Zarr Hackathon: from exploration to optimisation in cloud-native Earth observation

As a side event of BiDS25, in collaboration with the EOPF Toolkit project, the EOPF Zarr hackathon invites participants, from newcomers to experts, to dive into the Earth Observation Processing Framework using cloud-native formats like Zarr, STAC, Dask and Julia.

Focused on real-world challenges across Copernicus Sentinel missions, the event fosters collaboration and innovation around themes such as chunking strategies, DGGS, GeoZarr, CF conventions and more. A full-day tutorial on EOPF tools and technologies will be offered beforehand, ensuring all participants are ready to explore and experiment.
